Nokia Card Phone 2.0 Preview

August 10, 2006 in Nokia Phone Previews

This is a new one. A phone that makes calls and acts as a modem. Yeah, it sounds like any other cell phone on the market. However, the Nokia Card Phone (2.0!) is missing a camera, keypad, and even a display. So where’s the phone?

The Nokia Card Phone: Not Quite a Phone

The Nokia Card Phone 2.0

Okay, so I fibbed a little bit. The Nokia Card Phone 2.0 is actually a device for your laptop that allows you to send and receive calls, provide a modem with somewhat crappy speeds, and connect to other serial devices via the RS-232 interface.

What kind of speeds can you expect on a little card phone? Well, try 14.4 kbps. Or if you’re lucky, you can get HSCSD, which can bring up the download speeds to about 43.2kbps. Nokia compares this speed to a 56k analog modem (I believe it’s 43.2 kiloBITS / 8 which equals about 5 kiloBYTES per second. You’re not gonna be breaking the sound barrier any time soon with those speeds.

One interesting feature is the RS-232 interface. This serial connection, Nokia says “makes it the ideal solution for vertical and industrial applications like telemetry, meter reading, vending machines, traffic management and POS terminal.” It’d certainly be interesting to see what you could do connecting to other serial interfaces. (vending machines have serial ports?) Maybe a bit ‘o hacking to snag some candy bars?

Sadly, the card phone only operates on 900/1800 networks. Which pretty much excludes the entire United States. But it’s cool. Since we have something here called wi-fi.
