Nokia Camera Flash Attachment PD-2

August 22, 2006 in Nokia Phone Accessories

Well, here’s a new one from Nokia’s extra accessories to carry around department: I present to you the Nokia PD-2 Camera Flash Attachment.

This fun little device was originaly designed for the Nokia 7610, but since it uses the famed Pop-Port ™ connector, it should be good on almost any Nokia phone. Of course, if your Pop-Port is located right on the flip phone hinge like my N71, it’s pretty useless.

But of course everyone’s probably asking the same question. What’s the point of an extra flash when nearly every new Nokia phone with a half-decent camera comes with a flash?

The answer is battery life. And also the fact that most of the flashes that come standard on Nokia phones are these dinky little flashlights that couldn’t flash even in complete darkness.
Each “flash” consumes a nice chunk of battery life.

This is a Good Thing and a Bad Thing. The Nokia PD-2 camera attachment has its own battery, but that also makes it unnecessarily larger and heavier. But I suppose if you’re achin’ to do some shootin’, and you need a (better) flash for your phone then the PD-2 is it.

Personally, the flash on my Nokia N71 seems to be pretty capable for the few night pictres that I actually attempt. Of course, these night shots are almost always within like 2 feet range. The bulb or led or whatever just doesn’t have the power to light up an area and it doesn’t seem as if that’s going to change in the near future – Nokia N93 or not.

Carrying around this attachment also reminds me of the other Official Nokia Cameras out there. Yes, Nokia sells a couple smallish cameras like the Nokia Headset Camera (VGA) and the Fun Camera (also VGA). The Headset camera doubles as a radio/headset connector (who the heck thought of that?), while the Fun Camera is a standalone device that is not only one of the ugliest cameras on earth, it takes some pretty crappy pictures too. (not to mention no expandable memory, no digital viewfinder, etc). It DOES have a flash however.

As of now Amazon is selling the Nokia PD-2 for $54.99. Is it worth the price? I think that’s a negative.
