Nokia Week in Review (Week of July 9)

July 13, 2006 in Nokia Phone News

In this edition of the Nokia Week in Review, we’ll look at BusinessWeek’s 8801 phone review, the start of a long-running legal battle between Nokia and Qualcomm, and the Nokia 3250. Check out the full entry for the whole shebang!

My Nokia news week started last Friday, when Business Week Online reviewed the Nokia 8801 phone. Quote: “The cell phone maker’s fashion-forward new model isn’t as user-friendly as the price tag might lead one to expect.” The Nokia 8801 is expected to retail for about $550 US dollars and will be carried by Tmobile. My opinion: spend the extra 100 bucks or so and get yourself an N91. Or an N80.

Ouch! Earlier in the week, Qualcomm nicely informed the press that the US International Trade Commission has launched an investigation into whether Nokia has infringed on certain patents owned by Qualcomm. Six patents, to be exact. Qualcomm then dropped The Bomb and requested that the infringing phone models be barred from entering the US of A.

Nokia announced that the Nokia 3250 music phone, the “phone with a twist” (keypad rotates to enter camera mode, music mode, or talk mode) sold 1 million units in less than five months. Keep in mind that Nokia has also been cleverly hiding this phone from the United States – apparently all we’re good for are crappy 8801s.

Another business article in Forbes magazine claimed that the top 100 “managers” on Marketocracy (basically a site that ranks a lot of different money managers) dropped Nokia like a brick, among other telecommunications stocks. These “gurus,” however did invest in Research in Motion (RIM).

Nokia is also set to review their second quarter earnings for 2006 on July 20. Many analysts believe that Nokia is on track with sales of newer phones, so far forecasts for E-Day are looking pretty good. Hopefully, the earnings call will strengthen Nokia’s piece of garbage stock that has been steadily falling in the past couple of weeks.

Well, it looks like that’s it for this week. Tune in next week for more wild and wacky Nokia phone news!
