Nokia Week in Review (week of 7/2/06)

July 6, 2006 in Wireless Industry News

The extended July 4th weekend (since it fell on a Tuesday) gave me an extra day off from work, among other things. Unfortunately it didn’t help Nokia’s stock price, which has been more or less stagnant for the past week. Opening at 20.44 on Monday, NOK closed today at 20.08. Ouch.

Earlier this week, Brazil, China, and India were said to be considering a move from CDMA to GSM. More specifically, the Brazilian company Vivo (supposedly) was in talks with the likes of Siemens and Nokia (among other lesser known companies) to provide GSM network equipment. Why is this huge? Well, it’s certainly bad for Qualcomm, a leading manufacturer of chips found in CDMA cell phones. Also it’s potentially a VERY BIG DEAL to the big CDMA players in the US market, namely Verizon and Sprint. If the market for CDMA phones and equipment gets smaller and smaller, there will be less incentive for big phone manufacturers to provide CDMA products. If you thought Verizon’s phones were bad enough now, just wait – they could get a lot worse (hah!).

One day after this Big News, Nokia won a contract with China’s Henan Mobile Communication Co. to provide GSM network infrastructure hardware for – you guessed it – the Henan province in China. The deal was reportedly worth 150 million US dollars.

Nokia was also chosen to become the media content provider for New York City’s free wi-fi in the parks initiative. Never mind the fact that Nokia only has three devices that have built-in wi-fi – the Nokia N91, N80, and the 770 Internet Tablet.

There were no new handsets, unless you count the Nokia 6070 phone that was recently introduced to Nokia’s Hong Kong site.

And that’s it for this week’s Nokia Week in Review. Tune in next week for more exciting developments in the world of Nokia!
