Accessory: Nokia Music Stand MD-1 Preview

July 30, 2006 in Nokia Phone Accessories

External iPod speaker stands seem to be all the rage these days. After all, it’s like having your own pesonal boombox without the radio, tape, or CD player. Considering MP3′s are now THE standard music format, it helps to have nicely sized external speakers that hook up directly to your device, right?

Enter the Nokia Music Stand MD-1. Now that MP3′s and cell phones are pretty much intertwined these days, I suppose it was only a matter of time before one of these newfangled things were released for cell phones.

The Nokia MD-1 Music Stand

The MD-1 (which has nothing to do with MD, Sony’s minidisc format that went the way of the videotape) is an external “set” of speakers for your Nokia phone. Using the infamous Pop-port connection, the built-in stereo amplifier can pump out the latest chart-toppers whether it’s U2 or some guy named Chingy.

Looks-wise, the stand is a little funky. The outside is made of rubber so you can rest your phone on the inner donut part without having it slip off. To be honest, the MD-1 looks more like an air purifier than a set of speakers.

Besides the obvious feature of being able to play songs from your phone, the Nokia Music Stand also features an integrated microphone, FM radio antenna, and audio inputs for use with other audio devices such as a CD player or MP3 player. You can also use the Music Stand as a Nokia phone charger.

The microphone allows you to use the MD-1 as a speakerphone for your Nokia, and to send/receive calls.

If your Nokia phone doesn’t have expandable memory or you just don’t have any music to load onto your phone, you can also use the built-in FM radio antenna along with the integrated FM radio software on your Nokia phone.

I think a separate display for the Music Stand would’ve been a hot feature, considering how your phone, by default will shut off backlighting which can be quite annoying. I guess you could always go into your phone settings and set your backlight to the “never turn off” feature, but it’s always that extra step that makes the difference.

Normally I’d have a few more comments about this product, but this weekend’s unbearable heat has just tired me out completely. Ugh.
