Here we have a prime candidate for a Nokia “most out-of-line” imaging product award. I present to you the Nokia Kaleidoscope RX-11.

Remember those old, red ViewMaster image binoculars? Even though these things are older than most old people, consumers are STILL buying them. So what does Nokia do? They make an RX-11 Nokia Kaleidoscope that lets you project your own image onto the end of it. What the heck?!

It sounds a bit unbelieveable, but the RX-11 is actually pretty technologically advanced. Nokia didn’t just steal the ViewMaster plans and plop some electronics mumbo jumbo into it – the RX-11 has infrared, an MMC slot, and 2 megabytes of internal memory.

The internal display is 270×228 pixels large, and the Nokia RX-11 supports up to 32,768 colors. Which is not quite that impressive however.

Using the Nokia Kaleidoscope RX-11

Sadly, the Kaleidoscope is only good for about 50 minutes of active viewing before dying out. At least the onboard lithium ion battery is rechargeable using any of the standard Nokia chargers.

Nokia’s website states that the Nokia RX-11 Kaleidoscope will be “available in 2004,” but it isn’t very easy to find a retailer that actually CARRIES this device. Although one place was selling it for 32.99 GBP (pounds) which ends up being about 45 US Dollars.
