Phone Preview: Nokia E70

Nokia now has the E70 listed as “Coming Soon” on their US site. There’s still no actual release date, but at least we know it’s coming. Soon.

The Nokia E70 is part of the Eseries business line of cell phones. While most of these are focused on personal productivity more than leisurely features (most don’t even have integrated cameras), they all run Symbian and in general are pretty high-powered phones.

More about the E70 in the extended entry.

The Nokia Eseries Line of Cell Phones

Now the E70 is what I would term the most unique of the bunch. It’s part of a select few phones that have a folding keyboard, which Nokia started with the release of the Nokia 6800 several years ago. Having owned several 6800′s myself, I can vouch for the usefulness of the keyboard. It’s just THAT much faster than T9 or letter-by-letter typing. And I’m really not a fan of the E61/E62/Blackberry phones.

Besides the folding keyboard, the E70 also offers WLAN or wi-fi, and VoIP (voice over ip). So you can talk through the Internet at any hot spot. Of course, there is no word yet on how this feature is going to be implemented (Google Talk would be my guess).

One of the complaints of the original 6800 was the lack of a real email client on the phone. (at the time it was only a java application, and I don’t believe this was remedied in the 6820 series). This time, Nokia has gone whole hog and introduced a REAL email client with support for attachments, data roaming, intellisync, and also 3rd-party email clients such as Blackberry Connect, Visto, and Seven Always-On Mail.

Other notable features include a 2 megapixel camera (pretty much standard on Eseries/Nseries phones), Symbian OS 9.1, a high resolution 352×416 pixel display, and up to 7 hours of talk time with the included 1150 mah Nokia battery. Very impressive.

I should probably add that the Nokia E70 SAR values are 0.99 W/kg for use at the ear, and 0.67 W/kg when worn on the body. 0.99 is a little higher than average.

One last point that I forgot to make: the E70 is triband 850/1800/1900. Why they didn’t just make it quad-band I have no idea.

All in all, the Nokia E70 looks to be a pretty strong showing, with a great variety of features. Regardless of whether you’re a business exec or just another Nokia aficionado.
