Phone Previews: Nokia 6151 and Nokia 6080 Phones

So now we're getting the down low on the Nokia 6151 and 6080 set of phones. These are the two GSM superstars released at Nokia Connections 2006 currently going on in Singapore. The third GSM phone, the Nokia 1110i, is such garbage that I will never mention it again.

Read all about 'em in the full entry.

Meanwhile, the 6151 is Nokia's newest and most expensive of these mid-tier cell phones. It's got a 1.3 megapixel camera (no flash), landscape mode, Bluetooth, 30 megabytes of internal memory, expandable microSD memory slot, FM radio, MP3 ringtones/music player, and a loudspeaker/push to talk.

The best thing about the Nokia 6151 is the price: the phone is expected to cost about 210 Euros (265 dollars before taxes, subsidies, contract benefits, etc). That makes it practically free in my book. Of course, you'll never see the Nokia 6151 because it's headed for everywhere else BUT the USA (Europe, Middle East, Africa, Asia). Since it's being touted as a cheap 3G phone (WCDMA 2100 + GSM 900/1800/1900), I guess it has no place in America. (Nokia would rather promote the N91 probably)

Talk time is fairly good on the Nokia 6151. We're looking at up to 4.5 hours of talk time with the standard battery.

The 6151 will be released in the third quarter of 2006. It's not a bad phone, but then again it isn't a great phone either. And if you really want one, eBay is calling.

The Nokia 6080 Phone

On the other hand, the Nokia 6080 is designed to be a small, sleek, stylish GSM phone that won't break the bank (or even the piggy bank). Costing only a mere 180 Euros (227 US dollars), with the 6080 in hand you get a very basic camera phone (so far it's looking like a VGA camera), FM radio, mp3 ringtones, "a Sudoku game" as if there weren't enough of those, and finally - get this - a blinking light to to indicate a missed call or message! Yippee!

I actually do wish that Nokia would implement the light on their other cell phones. I mean, which some phones like the Nokia 6260, how can you tell if you've got a missed call if there no damn external screen? And EVEN with the external screen in the flip phone case, half the time I don't check it to see if I have a missed call.

Oh well. The 6080 is headed for Asia, and if you want one you'll have to go there too. (Chinatown is a good substitute however) Seriously, get a real Nokia phone.

The Nokia 6080 has a talk time of up to 3.5 hours.

Looking over the press release, I find nothing else noteworthy about the Nokia 6080. It does come in 3 colors however: black, gold, and silver. Personally, I was hoping for some orange.
