Phone Preview: Nokia E50 Phone

Nokia Europe has a new cell phone listed – the Nokia E50 business phone. Definitely a little better looking than your typical business phone, the E50 provides quad-band GSM for around-the-world use, a 1.3 megapixel camera and the always impressive Symbian OS 9.1.

The Nokia E50 Phone

The E50 is the newest Eseries phone – Nokia’s business and corporate line of mobile phones. Aimed primarily at “heavy users of voice” in the business world, the E50 comes standard with features for users to connect with their work teams.

First up is the addition of “PBX solutions,” or private business exchange. The whole point of PBX is for employees to quickly and easily connect to each other no matter where they are. It’s also basically a company-specific phone system.

The Nokia E50 phone attempts to bridge the gap between office phones and cell phones. Nokia is pushing Avaya’s one-X Mobile Edition for S60 devices as a one-stop solution for inegrating personal and business calls – you can have multiple phone numbers on one E50 and toggle between them. For example, you can turn off your business line at the end of the day and keep your personal line open. In addition, the Presence feature (which is nothing new), allows you to see the status of fellow team members (a mobile Buddy List pretty much).

Rounding out the business features is support for third-party email services such as BlackBerry connect, Visto Mobile, Altexia, and ActiveSync Mail.

The battery life on the E50 is something to speak of – the E50 delivers up to 6.8 hours of talk time and up to 9 days of standby time with the standard BL-5C battery (970 mah). Nokia also offers the BL-6C battery which bumps up the talk time to 8 hours.

In terms of other notable features, the Nokia E50 has a 1.3 megapixel camera, a 240×320 pixel screen, Bluetooth, and expandable memory (microSD). It’s nothing spectacular, but the addition of a camera is a nice touch considering this feature is missing from the other Eseries phones.
