Phone Preview: Nokia 5500 Phone

Ok, so the word’s out that this is the newest Nokia cell phone to hit the (gyms). The Nokia 5500 phone is a kind of weird hybrid phone reminiscent of the Nokia 5100, the original calorie counting cell phone. It’s meant for athletes and (overweight people?) more than anyone, and it’s got a lot of features to that end.

Read all about it in the full entry…

The Nokia 5500 has three different modes – phone mode, music mode, and sports mode. Sounds like the 3250. While the first two are pretty self-explanatory, the sports mode is where the 5500 is supposed to shine. With its integrated pedometer (a counter that records the number of steps you take), the 5500 can record how many calories were burned during an exercise session.

Primarily made with stainless steel and rubber, the Nokia 5500 phone is meant to take more than its share of falls. Except from what I remember stainless steel tends to scratch a lot. Nokia has announced that the 5500 is made from “materials used in the latest high performance running shoes.” That’s odd, I don’t remember seeing stainless steel in running shoes.

I’m definitely not feeling this oldschool 3360-ish look. Not sure I’d want to be seen around with this phone.

Let’s look at some features. Features? Believe it or not, the Nokia 5500 is a smartphone – and it also has support for 1gb microSD cards. That’s right, microSD and not miniSD. MicroSD cards are pretty damn tiny – almost the same size as one of those TransFlash cards.

There’s also support for text-to-speech – the 5500 can read back messages and also certain parts of your workout (I guess like calories burned?).

And before I forget, the 5500 is triband 900/1800/1900 mhz. Will it ever come to the USA? Probably not.

The Nokia 5500 phone will retail for 300 Euros ($381 USD).
