Nokia News: Week in Review
In this issue of the Nokia Week in Review, we'll look at counterfeit phones, a showdown between wireless industry giants Nokia and Qualcomm, and Vertu. Vertu?
Find out more in the extended entry.
A couple of new developments have happened since my last little Nokia news rundown. Here's the scoop:
Nokia has started upping the ante against counterfeiters. What counterfeiters, you ask? Try "Suplimet Corp. and Hermann Lozano" for one. Nokia won damages of $1.36 million from these guys for "trafficking in fake Nokia goods." I hope it's just limited to Nokia accessories, because counterfeit phones are kind of scary (so are the generic ones now being sold on ebay and marketed as similar to the Nokia N90).
The CEO of Nokia is now Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo. It used to be Jorma Ollila, and I think we'll miss his accent-laced conference calls. He did sound like a friendly guy though. One of the new CEO's opening reports was that Nokia would be taking more of a pragmatic approach to acquisitions and partnerships. So we might see Nokia working together with more diverse companies than just Google, Inc.
Did you know that Nokia has a luxury line of cell phones? It's called Vertu, and they're being sold in high-end department stores. Features include diamond studded faceplates, stainless steel keypads, and 16 carat gold surfaces. Sorry, no coupons available for these phones. Anyway, Vertu is growing in "three digit numbers" so I'm sure it's coming soon to your favorite rapper.

The Vertu phone line almost demands a picture. Hopefully I'll do some phone previews on these Vertu phones as they are pretty interesting. It's too bad there's no price tag (isn't the Nokia N91 already a luxury phone?)
In more negative press, Nokia is being sued by Qualcomm, Inc. You may have heard of them. Qualcomm claims that Nokia "violated two patents in its mobile devices." This is of course occurring in the United Kingdom - in November, Qualcomm sued Nokia in the US of A. The news of course helped lower both companies' share prices on the stock exchanges.
And that's all the news for this week, check in next week for another round of entertaining Nokia news. Tomorrow we will continue our previously scheduled program with the Nokia 6280 phone preview.
