Comparison: Nokia E70 and Nokia 6822 Phones

April 9, 2006

If you’ve been reading the blog or checking out the latest news, the E70 business phone (part of Nokia’s new Eseries of phones, read more about the Eseries and delays in shipping here) was delayed and will start shipping in a couple weeks as opposed to last week.

Nokia also previously announced the Nokia 6822 phone, which is the continuation of the 6800/6820 series of text-messaging phones for the consumer market. It’s officially listed on the nokiausa.com site as “coming soon.”

They look pretty similar though…

What’s the difference?

The E70 phone is Symbian 9.1, has a 2.0 megapixel camera, wi-fi capable, push-to-talk, and has all the smartphone bells and whistles while the other….has a dinky .3 megapixel camera, and…that’s about it.

To be more specific, the Nokia 6822 phone is a Series 40 (second?) edition phone and it lacks the Active Display feature found in the more recent Series 40 phones. Odd considering the 6822 IS one of the more recent Series 40 phones. The only notable feature (besides the keyboard) seems to be the loudspeaker.

The Nokia 6822 DOES have 850 mhz support for Cingular users, while the E70 is stuck on world triband (900/1800/1900).

One bright spot is that both phones have well-above average battery life. The E70 is equpped with an 1150 mah battery while the 6822 has a 900 mah battery which is not too shabby for such a (crappy) phone. This translates into 7 and 6 hours of battery life, respectively.

However, Nokia went very budget on the 6822 and the final product is something that (and I seem to say this a lot these days) belongs in a museum. It’s actually not much better than the first incarnation of the 68xx series – the Nokia 6800 phone – the only addition since then seems to be the VGA camera.

  • kylie notes:

do you know where I can buy the Nokia E70. I know it’s really old now a days, but all the phones I get seem to work like crap after a little while. I was thinking the E70 is a good phone, my friend used to have one about 2 years ago at the most… I’ve looked all over, eBay has some but not many choices, amazon has nothing, and the Nokia website doesn’t sell them anymore. I can find tons of the 6822 but none of the E70. Let me know! Thanks.
