Nokia cell phone tidbits and other randomness…

March 28, 2006 in Nokia Randomness

I stumbled upon some interesting stats while on the Nokia Global corporate site.

Did you know that the U.S.A. was once the biggest sales market for Nokia? Unfortunately, that was in 2003, and times have changed. Today, not only is the great U.S. of A no longer #1, our Nokia cell phone sales have actually declined in the past 3 years! Pretty sad. But then again, if you think about it – how many friends do you know with Nokia cell phones these days?

My five closest friends have the following brands of phones:

Motorola
Motorola
Motorola
Samsung
Sony Ericsson

Back when the 8265 was THE high-end Nokia phone, Nokia cell phones were everywhere. Most of them took the form of crappy 5165 or 5160s, but they were still Nokias.

And while I hate to admit it, Motorola is doing a great job bringing new, simple, stylish phones to the worldwide market. They’re cell phones that look and feel expensive, regardless of the price (they’re pretty affordable). And they’re all quad-band too.

Nokia cell phones have always been known for reliability, simplicity (in terms of usability, not looks), and affordability. However, while Nokia today still has a line of “budget” phones, the majority of their cell phones fall into two categories: the “fashion” expensive phones, and the “expensive” expensive phones. Just look at the nSeries.

The last time I checked Nokia’s market share was a steady 34%, but I think this is due to Nokia’s rush into “emerging markets” which means selling cheapo phones to poor countries, while also selling nSeries type expensive-ish phones for expensive-ish prices (lots of profit on those).

Anyway, following the stats that I was talking about before, the highest grossing market in 2005 for Nokia cell phones is now China (no surprise there). That number is almost definitely going to increase considerably in the future…Another interesting point is the U.K in third place, which is not exactly a spot where I imagined lots of Nokia cell phone sales.

Guess I’ll get back to the reviews (still have my Nokia 6800 cell phone review even though that phone is a dinosaur) tomorrow.
