Accessories: Nokia Bluetooth Image Viewers SU-2 and SU-7

Today we’ll be looking at some image viewers released by Nokia. These are somewhat scrappy, and I think Nokia still has a long way to go in this field.

The Nokia SU-2 Image Viewer

The Nokia SU-2 image viewer lets you view photos taken from a compatible Nokia phone or PDA and display it on your NTSC or PAL tv set over a wireless Bluetooth connection. It’s a kind of cool idea, but I wish there was a screen and support for higher resolution images.

Takes 4 AAA batteries or a compatible Nokia phone charger.

Mr. SU-2 supports up to 640×480 JPG images – personally, I hope this is a mistake ’cause the photos on my N90 are a heck of a lot better than 640×480. There’s 3 megabytes of onboard memory on the unit without any hope of expandable memory.

Nokia’s site is currently selling this product for the severe ripoff price of $84.95 with a $5 accessory coupon.

Now it appears that it’s available in the budget section of LetsTalk.com for only 5 bucks. Apparently the original price was $169.99 (how it was worth 169.99 back then I have no idea)

Nokia SU-7 Image Frame

The SU-7 is the solo version of the SU-2 – it has its own screen and does not output to tv or anything else for that matter. It takes a SIM card so you can MMS pictures to the frame and lets you create custom slideshows based on what’s stored in memory. The screen is a decent 5.1 inches diagonal, which isn’t too bad.

The problem is there’s no Bluetooth. There is infrared support, but come on – most phones these days have Bluetooth support over infrared, and infrared just plain sucks anyway.

This image frame supports a higher image resolution than the ill-fated SU-2 – 1024×768. Unfortunately the display is only 4096 colors so it’s definitely not going to look as good as on some newer Nokia phones.

No $5 deal this time: the SU-7 is $399.00 on Nokia’s site. Pretty ridiculous, eh?

If this product wasn’t so freakin’ expensive, I think it’d be a great replacement for a picture frame. I tend to like the idea of a custom photo frame that lets you change the image to anything you want, and supports some kind of quick and easy transfer method (like bluetooth). I could see larger picture frames being just LCDs that you can change with the touch of a button in the future.

It’s a shame that neither of these two image viewers really stacks it up – there’s just too many flaws in both of them to be really worth the (original) price.
